A Wild West Shootout is Just What John Moore is Seeking in Tucson

Bakersfield, CA – If ever there was a character who fit the “Wild West” persona, it would have to be Granite Bay, CA racer John Moore. Moore is a veteran racer with over 50 starts in the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series, a Super Late Model championship in the Pacific Challenge Series, and a Late Model track championship at ALL AMERICAN SPEEDWAY – ROSEVILLE CA. Moore and JM ENVIRONMENTAL, INC. have been the impetus for the “Wild West Shootout” events with the SRL, typically paying a minimum of $10,000-to-win. On April 15th, Round #1 of that 2023 series will take place at Tucson Speedway., with the running of the JM Environmental Inc. “Wild West Shootout-Heatseeker 127″ at the 3/8-mile progressively banked oval.
Moore is nearly a larger-than-life personality, who can be found sitting pit-side in his director’s chair, listening to music blaring from his race hauler, adorned with a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, cigarette, and his all-to recognizable mustache. As the series visits Tucson, a town and area synonyms with the Wild West, it is only appropriate that the first “Wild West Shootout” of the season would be hosted at the track with 55 years of racing history. It is with that in mind that Moore decided to open the three-race series, as he explained as only, he can.
“Come on baby. Tucson we’re gonna have everything but a gun fight. Cowboy hats are a must and bring your spurs.”
150 years ago, Moore would undoubtedly be recognized as a gunslinger. He would fit into the Tucson culture with ease at the time, but it is surprising that this event will be his first start at the facility, as well as his first visit to the area. The trip is something Moore looks forward to with the atmosphere, the racing, and the condition of the track surface itself.
“It will be my first time to Tucson to race or otherwise, and I’m looking forward to it”, Moore professed. “I love the western vibe, and as far as the racing goes, I know the surface is old and worn out. It will be an old-school short track race, and I’ve already ordered a new set of stickers.”
With the worn-out surface comes a different style of racing. One which can put strategy, seat of the pants feel, patience, and communication with the team at a high level of importance. With Derek Thorn Racing (DTR) and Mike Keen acting as Crew Chief, Moore has a proven quantity in his corner. His years of experience behind the wheel doesn’t hurt either, as he knows that he will need to use all his experience to pull out a win at his Tucson debut.
“I heard it’s a drivers track, which will put all of us to the test” Moore stated. “I wish it was 300 laps. There is nothing I like better than a tire smokin’, gear jammin’, Hot Rod race.”
Moore has had a strong start to the 2023 SRL season, finishing second in the “All-Star Showdown 200”, and sixth in the “Winter Showdown 135”. He will be coming in hot to Tucson, looking for his first series victory. On Saturday April 15th, the “Heat Seeker” will be “shooting at the moon”, seeking to reach new heights, and the biggest win of his career.
The JM Environmental Inc. “Wild West Shootout-Heatseeker 127” will be Round #3 of the 2023 Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series schedule. $10,000 will be awarded to the winner of Saturday’s feature thanks to the Winner’s Bonus from W.A.R. An autograph session is scheduled for 6:00 PM with Opening Ceremonies at 6:45 PM. Feature Events for the Spears Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, and Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series will follow.
